Short-form video ads are the fastest-growing format in digital advertising, and Florida retail brands are pouring budget into both TikTok and Instagram Reels. But which one actually performs better?
We ran a controlled test over 60 days with three Florida retail clients: a fashion boutique in Miami, a home goods store in Tampa, and a specialty food brand selling online. Same creative, same budget split, same timeframe. The results told a clear story, but it wasn't the same story for each brand.
The Setup
Each brand allocated $3,000 per month, split evenly between TikTok Ads and Instagram Reels Ads ($1,500 each). We used identical video creative adapted to each platform's specs. Same messaging, same call to action, same landing pages. The only variable was the platform.
Cost Per Click: TikTok Won
Across all three brands, TikTok delivered lower cost per click . Significantly lower. The average CPC on TikTok was $0.38 versus $0.72 on Instagram Reels. TikTok's auction is simply less competitive right now, especially in Florida markets outside of Miami.
Conversion Rate: Instagram Won
Here's where it gets interesting. Instagram Reels traffic converted at 3.2% on average, while TikTok traffic converted at 1.8%. Instagram users showed higher purchase intent, they were more likely to actually buy after clicking. The Instagram audience skews slightly older and more affluent, which matters for retail.
Cost Per Acquisition: It Depends
When you factor both CPC and conversion rate, the CPA tells the real story:
- Fashion boutique (younger audience): TikTok CPA $18, Instagram CPA $24, TikTok won
- Home goods (25-55 demographic): TikTok CPA $31, Instagram CPA $22, Instagram won
- Specialty food (broad audience): TikTok CPA $26, Instagram CPA $25, essentially tied
Engagement and Brand Awareness
TikTok crushed Instagram on engagement metrics: video completion rate, shares, comments, and saves were all significantly higher. If your goal is brand awareness and top-of-funnel reach, TikTok is the clear winner. If your goal is direct sales from cold traffic, Instagram often delivers better ROI for brands targeting customers over 30.
Our Recommendation
Don't pick one. The strongest strategy uses both platforms with different objectives:
- TikTok: Awareness, reach, engagement, and audience building. Works best for brands targeting under-35 demographics
- Instagram Reels: Conversion, retargeting, and direct response. Works best for brands with established audiences and higher price points
The key is testing with your specific audience in your specific market. Florida's demographics vary significantly, what works in Miami Beach may not work in Jacksonville.
